BECOME A HABITAT HOMEOWNER

All applicants are encouraged to attend an application meeting in order to qualify for the Homeownership Program.
The next application meeting is April 30th 2018 at 6 pm at the Bob Herzfeld Memorial Library in Benton 
1800 Smithers Rd. Benton, AR
When you complete you application bring it back to the Habitat office with a payment of $25 per adult in the house to help cover credit report cost.

PROGRAM: HABITAT PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR FAMILIES TO BECOME HOME BUYERS

  2. Habitat is not a handout, it’s a hand up. Zero percent interest mortgage loans keep the homes affordable. Habitat is a nonprofit organization. Mortgage payments are used to build more homes.

  3. Habitat builds simple, decent, energy efficient homes with 3 or 4 bedrooms, depending on family size. All homes are built in Habitat’s Partnership village, located south of downtown Benton.

THE FIRST STEP: ATTEND AN APPLICATION MEETING

All applicants are encouraged to attend an application meeting in order to qualify for the Home Ownership Program. Application meetings are held twice a year, usually in April and October, but contact the office to confirm the next date. You will be asked for a $30 per adult fee, for Habitat to pull your credit report.

PREPARE YOURSELF TO BECOME A HOMEOWNER AND HELP YOU QUALIFY FOR OUR PROGRAM

  1. Check your credit report! You can start paying off debts and taking control of your credit score. Free copies are available every year at www.annualcreditreport.com

  2. Volunteer at Habitat: Learn all you can about the program and meet other families like yours, already working toward home ownership. Sweat equity requirements cannot be counted until after acceptance into the home-ownership program.

DO YOU QUALIFY? FOUR FACTORS WHEN EVALUATING APPLICATIONS

  1. Current resident of Saline County, or an adjacent county without a Habitat, preferably for at least 6 months.

  2. Need for better housing: Income is at or below 50% of the median income for the area. Living in rundown conditions or paying too much for rent.

  3. Ability to pay the monthly mortgage: Income must be enough to pay the mortgage payment, as well as, other living expenses. 

  4. Willingness to partner with Habitat: Willingness to complete Sweat Equity hours, submit monthly mortgage payments on time, and attend Habitat activities.

AFTER SELECTION: FAMILIES BEGIN WORKING TOWARD THEIR HOME

Each family must complete a minimum of 300 sweat equity hours, plus 150 additional hours per able bodied adult. This includes mandatory home ownership classes, working on each other’s homes, and volunteering at the Habitat ReStore and Habitat Office. Each family will be required to complete a minimum of 25 hours and deposit $500 prior to the start of construction.
